“Layers of colour pulse through Marieke Dench’s new solo exhibition ‘Seeing Sound’, drawing her viewers into a dance as hypnotic as it is pictorially fascinating.
As the title of the show suggests, relationships between colours, forms and rhythms and their equivalence in sound and music is a central point of focus in this exhibition. For Dench, it is this correspondence and the phenomena known as synaesthesia that has been particularly inspiring. Synaesthesia is the term applied to a perceptual phenomenon wherein one form of stimulus – music for instance – activates other closely located synaptic pathways. The result is the involuntary impression of seeing colours prompted by sound.”
Quoted from the accompanying exhibition essay by Dr Damian Smith, 2018.
Marieke Dench has a Fine Arts Degree from The Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), and 1st Class Honours Degree in Fine Arts from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (R.M.I.T)
Dench has successfully maintained a recognised arts practice in her own right, exhibiting nationally and internationally for almost 20 years. The breadth of her practice is vast and includes advanced encaustic wax painting, watercolour and acrylic painting, printmaking and paper sculpture.
Dench has been the recipient of a Collie Trust Scholarship and has won a number of awards including the Silk Cut Award and Shell Fremantle Non-Acquisitive Print Award.
